Dear Prospective Sponsor:

The UC Irvine School of Medicine chapters of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and Student National Medical Association (SNMA) are proud to announce the ninth annual LMSA/SNMA Pre-Health Conference.  UC Irvine will host the event October 30-31, 2009 on the Main Campus.

The theme of this year’s conference is Empowering You to be the Future of Medicine. In addition to discussing major medical issues prevalent in our communities such as the growing demand of health care access, the conference will emphasize the need for individuals traditionally under-represented in medicine (URM) in positions of leadership in all branches of medicine. The LMSA and SNMA leadership is also determined to cultivate awareness within our future physicians, nurses, dentists and other heath related fields about primary care for the underserved in medical shortage areas, joint degree programs and health policy.

With the generosity of our financial sponsors, we are able to bring together physicians, researchers, medical students and undergraduates in a forum to disseminate invaluable information for our future community leaders. Riding on the success of our last conference, we expect in excess of 600 participants this year.  It is therefore necessary for us to petition for sponsors who may be interested in supporting our conference through their generous financial support.

Included you will find our complete proposal, which delineates the pertinent details of the conference, the levels of sponsorship available. Feel free to evaluate our proposal and contact us with any questions. Your tax-deductible financial assistance will help to shape the future of medicine by providing this forum where future physicians will explore all available careers in medicine.

Sincerely,

History of the Conference:

The first conference was held on March 2nd, 2002 at the UCI School of Medicine campus with an attendance of less than 200 pre-medical students. The keynote speakers were then chief resident of UCI Family medicine Dr. Louis DiBernardo and a former UCI Post-bac Dr. LaTanya Hines. Planning of the first conference in 2002 was guided by a small group of motivated UCI-CMSA (predecessor of LMSA) students who wanted to make a difference. These students set out to demystify the medical school application process to two target groups: medical school re-applicants and first time medical school applicants. Each year our conference has steadily grown and our conference objectives have expanded to be inclusive of all health professions, targeting underrepresented students from high school through post-baccalaureates.

In tribute to all those who have helped build our conference to be the largest in southern California, below is a list of themes from past conferences:

Year 1: UCI-COM: Re-applicant / CMSA Premedical Conference. March 2nd , 2002

Year 2: 19th Regional LMSA Conference. April 4-5th , 2003

Conference Objectives:

Background of Our Organizations:

The Latino Medical Student Association at the University of California, Irvine (UCI-LMSA) is part of the regional LMSA  network of students, alumni, and health professionals whose mission is to promote the development of Latino students through education, volunteerism, and professional networking opportunities that foster diversity, higher education, and the improved health of the Latino community. LMSA history dates back to the late 1960’s Chicano Movement, where Latino medical students from various California medical schools organized a state-wide effort to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine, with the hopes of better serving underserved communities. Our mission to increase the number of physicians serving Latino and other underserved communities continues to thrive; we currently have over 40 medical student and 300 pre-medical student members, in our organization. For more information visit www.lmsa.net

The Student National Medical Association at the University of California, Irvine (UCI-SNMA) is part of the nation's oldest and largest student organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. SNMA programs are designed to serve the health needs of underserved communities and communities of color. In addition, SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color and entering and completing medical school. Community service and outreach is at the heart and soul of the SNMA.  SNMA history dates back over 40 years to the first chapter established by in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College. National membership includes more than 7,000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians. Financing & Fundraising:

LMSA and SNMA have developed a strong, reliable and highly visible membership recognized both on the local and national levels. This accomplishment is the result of a steadily increasing number of members and other volunteers who have generously donated their time and expertise to further our goals.

LMSA and SNMA’s current priority is to develop a relationship with community leaders sympathetic to the medical health care needs or inner-city populations. We strongly believe the vitality of LMSA and SNMA depends on active, involved memberships and development of new partnerships with a wide range of funding sources, including community leaders and associated entities.

LMSA and SNMA chapters at UC Irvine are currently all-volunteer organizations. The annual conference is our main fundraising source to support our missions and goals. Contributions from outside sources are indispensable to ensure a successful campaign.
