Tips and advice:
Explore the AMCAS application before applying. Talk to someone about exactly when to apply. Make sure you have met all requirements, or talk to schools about finishing up courses over the summer, if necessary. Get a draft going of all your “activities” and have your mentors review it.
Have different people read your application (not just your mother and your best friend, but people who can critique it from an outside perspective). Watch closely for spelling/grammar errors. You do not need to include a million activities. Choose to talk about things that were substantial and that you can discuss comfortably at an interview.
Make sure you have a permanent email, phone number, and address to give on your AMCAS and secondary applications. Use professional email addresses.
Supply all letter-writers with the necessary information and deadlines. If you are using a letter-writing service provided by your institution, communicate with that office and make sure all materials, INCLUDING TRANSCRIPTS, are sent on time. Check with the medical school’s website to make sure they received your documents and your file is complete. Delaying transcripts will delay your application being processed (this can take 4-6 weeks).
Research medical schools, attend conferences if possible, and request admissions brochures/materials. Ask questions! Think about what YOU are looking for in a medical school.
Give yourself plenty of time to work on secondary applications--they're important! Save all documents, create backup files, organize application materials, and keep mindful of all DEADLINES. If you are mailing documents, get confirmation receipts that show postmark dates.
Research the school so you can tailor your secondary. Some schools will ask, “Why are you applying to University XYZ?” or, “What do you have to contribute to XYZ?”
Talk to medical students at the schools you are interested in and keep in touch with people. Medicine is a small world. You may have friends, mentors or may have met someone at a conference from a particular school. Use those connections.
